Teenagers

Information

Meaning

Teenagers is one of the only songs on The Black Parade that does not contain any direct references to the record concept.

It’s a commentary on kids being viewed as meat; by the government and by society. That’s how I felt in school, and after 9/11 happened that’s how I felt in general. It’s very important that this song is here because I always viewed this as about these kids in the parade who had killed themselves, who had made a big mistake. It’s a very powerful song.
Gerard Way – Kerrang! Magazine – November 2006

It’s about the sense of alienation I felt when we came off tour. I was riding the train to practice, watching teenagers, and I felt very old for the first time. I didn’t know if I could relate to the kids who were listening to us. I got real paranoid.
Gerard Way – Kerrang! Magazine – 2006

That song almost didn’t fit on the record but it’s a topic that’s so important to our culture. It’s about a really big problem in America where kids are killing kids. The only thing I learnt in high school is that people are very violent and territorial.
Gerard Way – NME.com – October 2006

This song is about some of you and what all of you used to be.

Lyrics

They’re gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep and eye on you, son
So they can watch all things you do

Because the drugs never work
They’re gonna give you a smirk
‘Cause they got methods of keeping you clean
They’re gonna rip up your heads
Your aspirations to shreds
Another cog in the murder machine

They said all
Teenagers scare
The living shit out of me
They could care less
As long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

The boys and girls in the clique
They awful names that they stick
You’re never gonna fit in much, kid
But if you’re troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did

They said all
Teenagers scare
The living shit out of me
They could care less
As long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me
