Meaning

To The End was inspired by the short novel “A Rose For Emily” by William Faulkner. In the story the main character Emily falls in love with a man named Homer, who is presumed to be homosexual. Despite this, Emily proposes to Homer but he continues to decline her advances. Because of this Emily kills Homer with cyanide and sleeps with his corpse in her bed.
Homers homosexuality and murder are described in the song lyrics:

He’s always looking at men
And all the cyanide you drank

There is also a lyrical reference to an elevator that only goes up to the tenth floor:

This elevator only goes up to ten

When a reported asked Gerard about this he replied:

Well, I felt that picking a lower number would be like “I can’t get high enough”, so I had to pick somewhere around ten… I felt like I just needed to get higher; like the top just isn’t good enough. I think that’s kind of a metaphor in how we feel and how we operate as a band, that the top isnt good enough since that’s not what we’re after. It’s not good enough for us because we want to make a difference and actually change things. We don’t just want things thrown at us.

A Rose For Emily

A Rose For Emily Book Cover

He calls the mansion not a house but a tomb
He’s always choking from the stench and the fume
The wedding party all collapsed in the room
So send my resignation to the bride and the groom
Let’s go down
This elevator only goes up to ten
He’s not around
He’s always looking at men
Down by the pool
He doesn’t have many friends
As they are
Face down and bloated snap a shot with the lens
If you marry me
Would you bury me?
Would you carry me to the end?
(So say goodbye) to the vows you take
(And say goodbye) to the life you make
(And say goodbye) to the heart you break
And all the cyanide you drank
She keeps a picture of the body she lends
Got nasty blisters from the money she spends
She’s got a life of her own and it shows by the Benz
She drives at 90 by the Barbies and Kens
If you ever say never too late
I’ll forget all the diamonds you ate
Lost in coma and covered in cake
Increase the medication
Share the vows at the wake
(Kiss the bride)
If you marry me
Would you bury me?
Would you carry me to the end?
(So say goodbye) to the vows you take
(And say goodbye) to the life you make
(And say goodbye) to the heart you break
And all the cyanide you drank
(And say goodbye) to the last parade
(And walk away) from the choice you made
(And say goodnight) to the hearts you break
And all the cyanide you drank
(So say goodbye) to the vows you take
(And say goodbye) to the life you make
(And say goodbye) to the hearts you break
And all the cyanide you drank
(And say goodbye) to the last parade
(And walk away) from the choice you made
(And say goodnight) to the hearts you break
And all the cyanide you drank
To the last parade
When the parties fade
And the choice you made
To the End
