Famous Last Words

Information

Famous Last Words was the second single from The Black Parade and the bands first single of 2007. Ray has stated the track to be his favorite on The Black Parade because it leaves the listener with a little hope at the end of the album.

Meaning

As with the other songs on the album, Famous Last Words was written partly about the Patient and the bands personal experiences.

There’s a certain importance to that song once you know a little bit more about what went on behind it.
Gerard Way – Kerrang! Magazine – 2006

At first I thought [the patient died], but the more I think about it, the more I think he’s not dead. Maybe this is all in his head. Maybe he can fight. Now I think he has a choice to live.
Gerard Way – New York Times

We needed a record with so many dark moments to have a song like this at the end. I think Ray really pushed for it to at the end.
Gerard Way – Kerrang! Magazine – 2006

Yeah, it’s one of my favorite songs and what I love about it is it brings a sense of of hope to the record and kinda sums up what the whole record is about: living your life to the fullest. We all felt that was the best way to end it.
Ray Toro – Kerrang! Magazine – 2006

That’s Ray’s favorite song. The stuff we think is really weird, actually people seem to love. People are tired of safe music. People want to hear something new and dangerous. The safer a song is, the glossier, the less interested we were.
Gerard Way – Kerrang! Magazine – 2006

It almost tells the story, in a weird way, of the making of the record without being specific. I just know that when we wrote it in the house it was at a time when it felt like the most honest thing, it felt like what we were going through, so its very hard to say, ‘Oh well this lines specifically about this’, its really actually not, its a strange song to pick apart but I knew it’s what we were all feeling at the whole time making the record.

Lyrics

Now I know
That I can’t make you stay
But where’s your heart
But where’s your heart
But where’s your

And I know
There’s nothing I can say
To change that part
To change that part
To change

So many
Bright lights they cast a shadow
But can I speak
Is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
A life that’s so demanding
I get so weak
A love that’s so demanding
I can’t speak

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I’ll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

Can you see?
My eyes are shining bright
‘Cause I’m out here on the other side
Of a jet black hotel mirror
And I’m so weak
Is it hard understanding
I’m incomplete
A love that’s so demanding
I get so weak

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I’ll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home

These bright lights have always blinded me
These bright lights have always blinded me
I said

I see you lying next to me
With words I though I’d never speak
Awake and unafraid
Asleep or dead

I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I’ll be forgiven
Nothing you can say can stop me going home
